Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Arrested At Bengaluru Airport For ‘Smuggling’ 14.8 Kg Of Gold

Kannada actress Ranya Rao – who starred opposite actor Sudeep in the 2014 film Maanikya, has been arrested at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. As per reports, the actress was taken into custody on Monday night after being found in possession of nearly 15 kgs of gold. Read on to know all about her arrest.

Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Arrested

As reported by PTI, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) made the arrest soon after Ranya arrived in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight from Dubai on Monday night. The actress came under DRI surveillance owing to her frequent international trips. Cops reportedly grew suspicious of the actress’ activities after noticing she had travelled to Dubai four times in 15 days, prompting a targeted operation upon her return.

Officials said she managed to wear most of the gold inconspicuously while also concealing gold bars in her clothing. Following her arrest on Monday night, the Kannada actress was presented before an economic offences court, which remanded her to 14 days in judicial custody. After her arrest, Rao was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru’s HBR Layout for questioning.

Preliminary investigations suggest Rao likely attempted to use her connections to bypass customs checks. The PTI report stated that upon landing, she allegedly claimed to be the daughter of Karnataka’s Director General of Police and contacted local police personnel to escort her home. An investigation is currently underway to determine whether any law enforcement officers – including her IPS relative, were aware of her activities or were misled into assisting her.

Who Is Ranya?

As per reports, 33-year-old Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of a senior IPS officer from Karnataka, K Ramachandra Rao, who is currently serving as Director-General of Police (DGP) at Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. Ranya is know for her performance opposite Kannada superstar Sudeep in the 2014 film Maanikya. She has also appeared in a few other South Indian films.
